Here is a subject that not too many pagans really discuss these days which personally I find to be a important topic.
I have a feeling there will be questions that will come up while reading this blogpost, which I will try to make things as clear as possible for everyone. The main one I can think of right off the bat will be " why is prepping important to pagans?"
Where I was born and raised here in a small farming community in central Iowa, we had our own garden which during the summer we always were growing beans, snap peas, radish, cucumber, potatoes and dad even tried growing sweet corn one season. My oldest brother also had a garden next door so he always had tomatoes, peppers, and other stuff growing besides having his own green house. Dad even created a grapevine to grow grapes to make wine. We also had 3 apple trees which we had 3 different kinds of apples growing to where we would use the majority of them to sell to the grocery store in town and make home made apple cider which dad would also sell.
If you have ever watched any of the prepping shows on tv or the reality shows with the people who live in remote parts of Alaska, they have to depend on growing their own food, canning, hunting, trapping, having to scavage parts from a broken piece of machinery to keep another working and running to coming up with home remedies for illness and minor injuries.
This is why I took an interest in prepping and emergency preparedness, people who grow an abundance of produce take some of their goods to your local farmer's markets so others may benefit from buying their home grown foods and have it be fresh rather than buying from the local store. I have also seen where kids are getting into collecting seeds and trading them with other kids as they feel that there will come a need one day where seeds are going to be sought after and desperately needed just like currency.
Here is a link you might find helpful called Prepping 101 a simple guide to help you get started with a plan and what you should work on. http://www.theprepperjournal.com/2013/06/12/prepping-101-a-step-by-step-plan-for-how-to-get-started-prepping-pt1/
Us as pagans who cherish nature and want to live off the land, this is why prepping and being self sustainable is so important. Believe this or not it is up to you but I will tell you that there are many of us pagans who do believe that we should all be working to establish our own gardens, to be growing our own food, preserving both the food we grow, the seeds that come with what we grow, and the knowledge to pass along to the next generation who will also need these skills to be self sufficient and to protect our own heritage.
There will come a time where we may not have the convenience of going to the store to get food, where gas will be in short supply, money will not be the only thing sought after by people but food and water will be in great demand.
For people who are currently utilizing a water collection system to collect rain water are smart as they can use this water for everyday use in the house and for pets to watering their gardens. Yes there are old laws in some states that prohibit you from collecting rain water in metro areas but I have not seen these laws enforced in rural or remote areas. Do your research if you plan to construct a water collection system to make sure you have all your bases covered to get the most out of the use of water collected.
Here is an example of a water collection system which is a DIY system https://morningchores.com/rainwater-harvesting/
Here is some question for all of you, " What will you do if you and your family were caught in a natural disaster?" Do you have a emergency plan in place ? Do you have emergency kits made up ? Do you have a resource of canned goods, non perishable items, batteries, flashlights, candles, a radio?
These are essential items that you should always have on hand and available at a moment's notice as you never know what could potentially happen in what ever region you live in. This is why I have taken a serious interest in prepping and doing what I can for my family and myself if anything were to happen.
Now I know there are also pagans who live in major metro areas who may live in apartments and asking " how can I possibly be self sufficient ? " you still can as there are several ways you can still grown a certain amount of your own food if you learn how.
I have seen where people are using buckets to half of a wine barrel to grow their own food on a balcony to using a small section of rain gutter or PVC Pipe to grow strawberries or other berries they can use and these are fresh and you know where your food is coming from.
Take a look at this link that outlines the many things you can grow in your apartments
